LAURA LAINE

I found this girl when I was searching for one of the spring 2008 Balenciaga Looks, those looks with the words: Atelier, Paris, Versailles, future and Cristóbal as the main ingredients of the recipe for the perfect Avant Garde mash up. Yes, this one, all in perfect symphony. So I found it; one of the few colored illustrations, yet with the same languid silhouette with tinny feet, subtle hands and deadpan faces characterizing Laura Laine´s drawings; Her label sign in gray scale bodies just left me flabbergasted; What I saw on that right moment, where figures moved by drafts, and at the same time with quietness all around, which prompted me, those drawings where the whisper of wind by itself.Laura Laine´s lines, alerts all my senses, It´s something very personal: For me this illustrations carry on music with them, inspiring harmony and rhythm on every stroke; and of course Now that I´m watching Balenciaga show, what else can I offer you than Concerto in G from Vivaldi to watch Laura´s art. I felt also sort of certain temperature in each of them; an extremely frizzy touch. The feeling when you are touching a rose in winter came to my mind; I can see myself with my getting my fingers through the hair; feeling the clothes texture, and suddenly, finding such sharp edges that can cut with just one little touch: I love that contrast, I´ll sum it up in just one word: ORGANIC, a keyword from nouveau also; so I can se a little bit of that old school style on her work.TASTE: I know it´s so weird, but this sense is the one arouses most. For me they tastes like that flavor with non flavor, like a church host, that depending on you humor it gives you the subtle sense of salty or sweetness, almost like electric vibrations, crunchy also. Got to this point, when I say those illustrations tastes, I can really say I have an incredible connection with Laura´s illustrations, she is the FASHION ILLUSTRATOR in all its words and capital letters, My favorite from all; She´s been crucial on my way to see fashion and feminine aesthetic; what Garcia Benito did in twenties capturing all that modernity, making it breathable this days, Laura Lain so is doing it right now! This is Laura´s time, I´m pretty sure in one hundred years; one guy named Tonio 3.0 will be writing how wonderful was this girl, how she can tell the aught´s story; rubbing the bottle and setting free all the senses Laura´s illustrations have the power to arouse. Her illustrations will last for ever and ever, and yes, talking about taste, they won’t last a sec; you can eat them in one bite. ¿Te huelen a algo?

Danny Roberts

Me pasa exactamente lo mismo con este ilustrador: ALUCINO CON EL.Take a second look and give him a second chance, sometimes the extra hype from media is offensive for some, but really, take a peep into Danny Roberts world.I think this guy has an incredible sense from current fashion esthetic; his work is the clear representation form the most inspiring images even for anyone barely involved in this industry, with illustrations made with wash technique, chalk and some wax crayons. His work prompt us, not everything is about skirt lengths and great patterns drawing for the right sketch reading; his start point are the fashion moments, memorable covers, and beautiness, simply and straightforward beautiness. Dozens of extremely skinny Gemmas and Sashas, The Chanel gang as one of his most memorable works; and of course his most recent creation featuring the new faces from the fashion gang including Bambi Northwood and my favorite Wilhelmina model, Melodie Monrose. His style is so recognizable; for him beauty goes further than clothing, he draws pseudo Icons, shooting stars who have come and we don´t know when they´ll be gone; hence I’m not quite sure if they could be appreciated tomorrow the same way we are doing today, in my opinion, and talking about the time representation, is the mid point among Garcia Benito, and Laura Laine. His point of view is super funny, garde, and extra Fashion, I´m not surprised why his fame grown in last years, since his illustrations are the clear reflection of the things inspiring the most basic fashionistas. I´m aware that there are so many illustrators out there deserving cult, but what can I do about it? I love Danny´s drawings and that´s it.

Eduardo García Benito

Baroque and Art deco: the two artistic styles and movements in general I feel most attracted to. I´d say also Nouveau and what about gothic spires and rose windows? yet the first two are the greatest for me: those are two extremely graphic and speaks for themselves. Summing up, for me both are impressive.
The fashion illustrator from today, was at the peak of his career when deco was already in vogue; there where a lot of exponents, as I may say the brand new Hollywood scene, with movie captions in a huge deco hotel halls or lobbies, or lets say the mythic Bauhaus. The future was there. Hope was there and Eduardo Garcia Benito came and put it into a bottle so it couldnt escape.
A rolled up rug was the most in trend silhouette on those days, there were no curves; instead, there was a certain androgynous and minimalism halo, which took apart the psychotropic adventures from Mr. Poiret. And yes, Once again, Eduardo Garcia Benito was there.
And he captured the moment like any one else did, and I mean any one; that modernity essence is still breathable through his vanity fair and vogue covers, It´s one of the fashion illustrators more avant, than garde that, today are such an undeniable referent on fashion illustration.

Fashion Illustration

This week will be all about the facet of fashion I like most; for which I feel such a passion. I can assure you, that since I was a child I´ve been felt very attracted to fashion Design; really since I was a little kid. Well I don´t meant to be that pretentious; let´s say I´ve always felt attracted by a certain esthetic, esthetic with woman shape in the most powerful sense; beauty in all its words.
My escape used to be quite simple, and way complex than you might think, yet it had such an inbuilt charm (you should tie you up in a kid´s shoes so you´ll find the true meaning of CHARM) also, a certain mystery and aim for discovering new styles, shapes and the designer´s flourish, how would I ask for something If I really didn’t know how to phrase the question?, that magic was completely unknown for me.

Fashion illustration was such riddle for me. My father has been key piece for that discovering and for that raise of my passion for drawing and graphic stuff (I don’t want to say arts since I’m so ignorant about the subject, my point is that I only felt attracted for such a primary thing like exaggerated poses with different outfits, that’s all)
He was the one that, with no judgments, started with his amazing skills, to project strong and angular lines for my very first fashion sketches; strong lines that I´ve inherit, lucky me. From there onwards I´ve had been drawing almost all the time, so I can say I´m a good drawer.

I let you with my favorite fashion illustrators; starting from the Spanish master Eduardo Garcia Benito, going through the Tavi from Illustration Danny Roberts to get to My all time favorite fashion illustration: Laura Laine;
I´ll talk about them one by one for one week, until getting to the shameless self-promotion, yes, I´ll show you all, all my illustrations.

Promised!

OMG, there are so many promises up here; let´s see if you don´t dedicate to me this song from Paquita.
P.S There are so many more illustrator out there that I love, there will be so much time to discuss bout their work.

Tonio.

FASHION

Since Im wrapped around in this industry, just as spectator since I don´t represent even a half part of a cat´s hair in the Eleanor Abernathy´s hangar, the Crazy Cat Lady from the Simpsons, I found there´s something, that from outside seems to be very uneven. A different vision from common people one, and vision from common people two; the last we could say, are those that know who is Pedro Lourenço, Bambi Northwood, or Igor+André, such a random selection (We may add McQueen) and the other classification: common people one, we include those that know fashion from characters like Claudia Shiffer, Linda Evangelista and, what´s the name of the aggressive one? Oh yeah… Naomi Campbell, also this group tend to think the designer of Chanel is Coco herself (We should add McQueen in here too, for those who discovered him after all the drama when passed away ) even we like it or not, the line separating both groups is almost invisible, here is when sprouts something really funny, a thing that makes you either love it or hate it: The Fashion cliché.
I dont want to be in favor or against it when setting out the subject, for many it could be offensive the way their art, their lifestyle and their soul, what fashion means for them, could be affected in a certain way, distorting the trade, OUR trade for this kind of clichés, clichés about extremely rich models sipping a bubb all the time, of designers with French accent, more feminine than all “The View” cast together, screaming and yelling for irrelevant things like "Who has brought this cerulean organza?!!" I´ve asked for Yves Klein, Yves Klein!"
Stories about editors with round glasses swooning and raving for a motorcycle handlebar top, from a guy named Thierry while screaming "¡¡¡¡BRAVISIMO!!!!"
These kinds of clichés have been feed by media, poor information given in dribs and drabs, and the great word-of-mouth by the talk of the town which I think is great that for some that halo of mystery behind fashion isn´t missed yet, while for people gobbling up fashion every day, it has lost its glow; its the clear example of satire´s industry, like the French crowd on Marie Antoinette times, speculating about how expensive may the Rose Bertin´s dresses could be.
The clear example to illustrate what I´m saying, and the reason this post sprout, is the 1994 film Prêt a Porter. A corny comedy that for me was just like a joke not very accomplished; I´ve recently got it thinking I was buying a treasure, well it´s a treasure, not the way I wanted.
In this movie the fashion designer is like the one I´ve already described; there are no Annas, Carines, Glendas and don’t you dare to think on Dello Russos, NO. The director have stuck on the editor in chief with the Non Four Blondes girl look, and other that matches exactly the former style editor Carrie Donovan, where seems to be nothing else than a crazy grandma, with a relation of hypocrisy-enmity with her fellow peers, having an endless battle with an arrogant photographer for who they beg for his photographs to illustrate their next issues…. NOT: Somebody tells me which photographer could ever decline to shoot the cover from Vogue Paris, i-D or I don’t know.
In all: sequences of stupid things, one by one. But I must say with a great source of enviable graphic material illustrating the work and the mood vibes from those years.
Far from getting mad or indignant at that kind of distort of the word Fashion, I´ve had a LOT OF FUN, I´ve seen past collections, and I even found some similarities with the latest Prada collection with one of a sort of-underground catwalk scene, in which if you strip out those looks, and get only the silhouette, you will notice its quite similar from the “I’m going bananas SS 2011” from Mrs. Miuccia.
To sum up: a HIGHLY RECCOMENDED FILM
Now there´s an open question: Are you agree with the direction fashion industry has moved? Where models are humble persons like us, just that in a beautiful swan shape; where there´s a bunch of eclectic mix of designers, as I say with physical, philosophical, origin and different status who have a lot to say. I mean a lot. I may sound so incisive, but also the democratization of information, the democratization of fashion, the topic of the week.
I will stand for the first, I feel very intimidated by old times.
On my humble opinion: Fashion clichés play down and fribble frivolity, while real fashion is the breakdown and the understanding of that frivolity.
Or vice versa?

Viktor and Rolf, Take a second, or a Thirth or a fourteenth… Or Just like me, a 326'285´976´552nd look.

What about the last post about Tom ford SS 2011? I´m quite satisfied with the collection, clothes are amazing and bla bla bla. Yet, his case left me thinking; Tom Ford was completely against that fast ping pong of information, he didn’t want for his clothes what happened to Prada recently, with Eva Mendez wearing one of the looks just seven weeks after the show, for her last movie promotion in Madrid, which prompted many (me included) that Mr. Ford had such a worthy argument for his reluctance to press. People sometimes get tired of the tons of information, that´s the reason of this post.
Once again I´m telling you guys that my blogger roll satisfy me a lot, for two things: How democratic is the sharing of information, and how anarchic is when setting it out.
Having said that, I´d like to share something that really gets me excited, cheers me up an upload my most IN-VOGUE battery. But warning! This is absolutely nothing new! Whoever who have took a peep through images will notice it´s been years! May also you will think this is so OUT, but why to be so IN always? And who decides that? The Glenda´s section from Harper´s Bazaar in and out? Why don´t look back in a NON-VINTAGE sense, and get excited again, see details, and let your self be excited one more time for one of those unforgettable fashion moments that make your day.
Play this song and keep reading.
Really, you got to, cause it was hard for me to insert this thing, it´s not an ornament. I mean it.
This is the case for this marvelous duo, Viktor and Rolf and his Fall ready to wear 2008 show, were a huge patent leather-esque wax seal, red pouts, panda makeup and more than seventy skeletons, made an explosive mash up for a high fashion cake recipe. Number by number Viktor and Rolf were making us understand who is the boss around here, who can add humor to the industry and who´s f$% in charge, one woman that says NO to the established, NO to the system, and NO to NOTS.
Thus one by one, from Magdalena opening the show, to Irinia Kulikova closing it, once again I felt shivers down my spine, Now I can say this show and Cutting Edge Couture are one of my top favorite (I have to mention obviously McQueen, Galliano on early aughts and so many many more)
I wont describe the collection, we´ve seen it on so many spreads and wherever, this show speaks for itself.
You may ask, If I liked their SS 2011 collection? Yes a lot. But I felt inspired today to talk about this one. Today I woke up with that Carl Craig song, and I want you to go to bed with it. Isn´t it good to look back and discover not everything is about Lanvin for H&M?

Tom Ford SS 2011, The Comeback

He hasn´t resisted, and we couldn´t withstand anymore; So much thread postpone and just one photographer: Terry Richardson, that took all pictures under only one condition: not revealing the memory card content until spring summer collections have hit stores and shootings on magz.
The one leading Gucci, then YSL has just kept the 50% of his promise, of not showing anything until january:
Here you have this pics from Tom Ford spring summer 2011 collection which I found at VOGUE.COM.
Yet, I must say, Tom has extra fulfilled the 100% of his promise of coming back more impressive, stronger, more powerfull, sexier, and more glamorous than EVER…(Pierre Bergé must be pulling out his hair, watching  his flat and boring Stefano)
Enjoy the photographs, we´ll analize one by one later, unvealing the inspirations look by look.

Good vibes for everyone!

Christian Lacroix, Haute Couture and Some Thoughts.

He hasn´t done anything wrong, I really don´t care about him; I barely have seen his work, I think I´ve seen two or three random looks, and I´ve changed to another web on the right in the moment, and is not his fault, but I must confess I’m SO NOT into him, I don´t like Sacha Walkhoff actually.
And it´s kind of weird; until today I haven´t seen his picture before, the thing is that, I´m mad about the situation, yes, the terrible fact, that whether we like or not, it´s been a fact of CHANCE.
So, having said that, I have no aim of blaming any one; but I just cant stand the fact of knowing that such a brilliant mind, passionate, creative and intuitive like Mr. Christian Lacroix´s, be there… sat down on a corner while a guy named "Sacha Walkhoff" takes over the company bearing his name.
Once again, sad but true, I´m such an immature guy that acts like a dog, doesn´t reason and starts hating the first person I see. I´m SORRY.
I will miss Vlada Roslyakova closing the show, with that mix of virgin-bride characterizing on the endings of Haute Monsieur Christian’s shows; the last one I remember how every one was raving, and snowing, in front of such a master lesson of craftsmanship and art; I´m missing all that whimsy, the bullion embroidery, sheer, flowy, structured, patterns, impossible combinations turned into possible, feminine, drama, sparkle, polka dots, stripes, stripes with polka dots, and polka dots striped and tucked into a magically twirled embroidery skirt. That´s it.. All in one, all mixed with extremely beautiful details made by maven hands.
This world is a pin pong game, like I said on past posts… and this can´t hold up Couturiers, so they are falling one by one: Christian Lacroix, Anne Valérie Hash, Thimster, Versace (yes, Versace), Joseph Font, and who´s next? Like Andre Leon Talley said; it’s a famine of beauty, it’s a famine of beauty honey!
My all time favorite collection from Mr. Lacroix, is the fall couture 2002, and the last, from 2009: they´re like poles apart ; On 2002 he was on the highest level, everything was doing well before the crash, and his bankrupt, it was all about flaunt, showing off wealth without bashfulness, that´s Haute Couture fellas; on the other hand, the last one he was saying good bye, couture died for him, the whole show seemed to me like a kind of funeral actually, with such an elegant assistants.
This Steven Klein pic is one of the looks of the collection the one closing the show in fact; and yes, it was for Madonna´s 2004 tour backdrops. AMAZING HUH??
Sorry for not posting yesterday for all you lovely people following every TLS´s steps, as you noted, it takes time to assemble the information. Love comes through the eyes, don´t you think? So, I want this blog be FULL of beautiful things. I call it, Auto-Inspiration :)
Have a great weekend.

ISABELLA BLOW

Since I started blogging, I´ve had the intention to write about Isabella Blow, I didn’t know which approach give to the article; didn’t know were to star either. If to link her first with Alexander McQueen, or if I should talk about the close relationship with Philip Treacy, or her roll as front rower, that never had a certain position in any fashion enterprise.

May be there, her passion would be such a great point to start, the fact she always was cold turkey from her favorite drug: fashion, art and the incredible joy of discovering something pleasant to her eyes, and so to her heart, to take apart pain and sadness and I dare to say to fill some space in her self being.
When I knew about the new book release Blow by Blow, wrote by her husband, I got excited, I really want to know more about her, as told from her beloved voice, so I´m absolutely buying it.World is changing, so is fashion, I can´t fathom to find another front rower like Isabella; and I mean “like” since she polished her resume just by facts: no blogs, no magz, no stores no nothing, just facts, love and bluff. Of course her maven eye for discovering talents made her place too.
And personally I wanted to thank Isabella for discover and for giving us the chance to get to heaven for ten minutes, watching McQueen’s skills in action and performing, so…Thank you for taking with Alexander an all, the edge off the anger of this world. Hope you´re doing well in heaven or hell. Say hi to Alexander, wherever you are, must be V.I.P.

P.D.

We have to take this opportunity to thank also, the wonderful Daphne Guinness, that on a recent auction bought all the stuff from Isabella, including the first Alexander McQueen Collection, no end of Philip Treacy treasures, clothes from years of fashion feeding, which does not deserve any less to be con Daphne’s shelves.

QUE TENGAN UN EXCELENTE DIA :).
